[ At some point on Christmas morning, a knock will come on Kleken's door as a gift is delivered by a helpful resort staff member. The box is wrapped in deep eggplant-colored paper and tied with silver ribbon, a card sitting atop and tucked under the bow.

The box contains a bottle of sake, one of Keita's favorites, and a heavy, fully-wound pocketwatch. When opened, the inside of the watch's lid bears a motif of tentacles that look very much like Kleken's, shifting back and forth on the smooth metal.

I thought of writing that it's been a pleasure getting to know you this year, but that feels oddly too formal for the tenor of our relationship now. And yet it's also true; spending time with you is comfortable and I feel safe in your presence.

Here's to more mischief made together in the coming year.
